Shanghai
In English, Shanghai means city by the sea. Bordered on the north and west by Jiangsu province, to the south by Zhejiang province, and on the east by the East China Sea, Shanghai is s strategic sea and river port that serves as the gatekeeper to the Pacific Ocean and the interior of China. The city is divided into two parts by the Huangpu River: Puxi (west of the Huangpu River) and Pudong (east of the Huangpu River). Puxi is the older part of the city where the majority of shops, restaurants, and museums are located. Pudong is the modern part with impressive skyscrapers, such as the Shanghai International Financial Center, Jinmao Building, and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. In the mid-1800s, Shanghai transitioned from a small fishing village to an international commercial port with strong influences from the British, French, and Americans. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II, Shanghai returned to Chinese control after the war and became relatively isolated from the rest of the world through the 1980s. In the early 1990s, the leadership of the People’s Republic of China designated Shanghai as the epicenter for the country’s commercial reawakening. Since then Shanghai has become the host of China’s stock market and serves as the nation’s most important industrial hub.
